Henry Speight started in the world of business in 1891, in Broomhill. His first venture was undertaking general haulage and furniture removals, along with supplying and delivering coal, using horse-drawn carriages. The horses residing at 41 Crookes Road, Broomhill.
The business continued to trade using horse-drawn carriages until the First World War, which is when the switch to motor vehicles was made. Henry continued to work at the company until 1940 when he retired and left the business in the hands of Messrs Brookes, Pickering and Myers. Parcel deliveries became a service they offered, with the company acquiring flatbeds for transporting furniture. Mr Brookes was the pivotal turning point for these flatbeds, as they had a demountable body designed for easy loading and transportation of furniture. This made these vehicles very rare indeed!
Fast forward to 1962, Mr D W Brookes took over the company with the help of his wife. Slowly but surely, the coal delivery service diminished from the company with the business focusing more heavily on the furniture delivery. At this time, a fleet of three flatbed lorries and six furniture vans were owned by the company.
In 2001, with Mr Brookes clocking in over 61 years at the company and over 25 years past the usual retirement age, he decided it was time for some well-earned rest. Today, Mark Bennett now runs the business.
We no longer use horses for our transportation, with our efforts focused on our fleet of purpose-built furniture removal vans. All of our vans are comprehensively equipped with specialist lifting to safely load and unload our vehicles with your furniture. From small chairs to large pianos, we’ve got the tools to make sure there’s no risk of damaging them during transit.
With our trusted team, we decided that in 2002, it was time to move away from Crookes Road. After 111 years of fantastic memories, we ventured into a new age for the business, allowing us to continue the excellent service that we’ve provided for many years. Retaining to our heritage, we continue to support families in Sheffield with their moves.
