Company History

Henry Speight started in business in Broomhill, Sheffield, in 1891. At that time he undertook general haulage and furniture removals, along with the supply and delivery of coal. His vehicles were horse  drawn and the horses were kept at  41 Crookes Road, Broomhill.

The business continued with horse drawn vehicles until after the First World War when the first motor lorries were acquired. Henry himself continued at the helm until 1940 when he retired and the business was then run by three directors, Messrs Brookes, Pickering and Myers. General haulage and removals were undertaken along with parcel deliveries; around 1940 the firm had flatbed lorries with demountable bodies for furniture. These were early Comma and Bedford vehicles and were very special for the day. Mr Brookes pioneered the use of demountable bodies in Sheffield with special bodies being built by Bonnalack of Wakefield.

Clients in these early times included Cole Brothers, Walsh's and GUS. The firm also undertook distribution of upholstered furniture by Scotts and Bond Upholstery as well as undertaking local and long distance household removals

In 1962 Mr D W Brookes took over complete control with his wife, Mrs D Brookes. Gradually the delivery of coal and steel diminished and, at that time they ran three flatbed lorries and six furniture vans, all Bedford TK vans.

Local and long distance removals were undertaken along with work for Sheffield University and other institutional clients, such as the Health Authority.

Over the years the firm has moved many Sheffield celebrities including Lord Riverdale, Sebastian Coe, Marti Caine, Tony Christie as well as several footballers and managers from both Sheffield clubs.

In 2001 Mr Brookes decided that he should consider retiring, having done approximately 25 years more service than usual retirement age would permit, and having clocked up 61 years at Henry Speights.

Mark Bennett took over the business from Mr. Brookes in August 2001. In December 2002 he relocated the buissiness away from Broomhill after 111 years to larger premises with up to date container storage, plus purpose built removal vans including two modern container vans.

During this time Mark Bennet appointed  Malcom Wright, whom had worked for the company since 1964 from the age of 17 as Manager.

In 2005 Malcom bought the company from Mark and is now continuing  the long tradition of excellent services to Sheffield families and businesses alike, and undertakes domestic and commercial removals both local and long distance and offer top quality storage facilities for our clients.
